Hi all,

Just thought i'd put a pic up of my first 100% hatch, took the eggs off at around 6:30 earlier tonight and took a look at around 9:00 and wow I was amazed. So I took a couple of pics and then fed the tank with rotifers and then put about 1ml of rotifer food in.
I will do a 1ltr water change in the morning before work and hopefuly will be on th eway to my first success.

Starting my first marine setup

Hi everyone my names Danny and im taking the step from malawis to marine i have just been out a bought a fluval corner tank 200ltr. I wasnt sure on the corner tank but my malawis take up a massive part of the house so only able to fit the new marine tank in the corner next to the dog and parrot
Anyway detail time i have bought some equipment and would like to see if im on the rite track after all this reading.
Tank 200ltr
skimmer v2 600
2x 1500 power heads
1x 1000 power head
Lights 2x t5 white and blue 24w
Fluval 205 external filter
I have yet to add water and certainly not fish. Im not in any rush and would realy like to see if the advice i have been given by my lfs is correct in terms of equipment as i want to keep soft coral, hard coral and fish.
Personally after more reading i think the lights are not good enoth, the tank is about 70cm deep????
I realy wanna get this rite as i dont want any casualties, im not here to fill a tank up and drop nemo, scar, and what eva the tangs called in a tank and watch them go belly up.
Im also going to buy my water at the lfs and wanted to know how long would i cycle the tank for with there water.
Also how much live rock would be enoth the fella at the lfs suggest 25-30kilo (200ltr tank)
And if your still with me and i havent sent you to sleep what would you suggest are the next steps i take.
Many thanks for reading Danny

One step forward.. two back?!?!

Hi all,

At the weekend i chose to buy my 3rd and 4th soft coral as a couple f weeks with no 1 and 2 were looking good. i too have a new pair of small clowns and a bubble anenomie. all appeared to be doing well.

My readings at the weekend were:
Salt - 19, Calcium 610, Magnesium 1170, KH 6, Nitrite 0,02 - 0,05, Nitrate <1mg/l, Ammonia 0,05, Phosphate 0.03, Temp 25.3

i realised i should do the following:
Raise salt to 23, lower Calcium to 440, Raise Magnesium to 1350, Lower Phosphate

Actions:
10 gallon (1/12th) Water change to lower calcium level, also added additional salt to raise salt level. Added new 2/3rds of a container of PhosGuard media to reactor.

4 days have passed and tonight i return home and find the latest two soft corals looking very poor, broken up in places. Fish looking good, anenomie too, one of the 4 corals ok, others not so..

tonights readings:
Salt - 23, Calcium 780, Magnesium 1110, KH 5, Nitrite 0,02, Nitrate <1mg/l, Ammonia <0,01, Phosphate 0.14, Temp 24

comparing the two readings, salt increase, calcium soared, phosphate soared. I suspect this has been due to the increased salt content in the salt and RO water change. Also the phosphate a reaction from the coral breakdown as a result of the calcium poss?

I am pondering on how to reduce the calcium without the salt or other readings deteriorating.

Can you please advise a suitable way forward?

Many thanks,

Eggcrate or not in the bottom?

Hi folks, I'm a week or two from setting up my first marine tank, a D-D 24g Nano, I'm just about sorted planning wise ( i think) but one small thing I can't decide on, what do you use on the bottom of your tank?

I've read threads & in books about using eggcrate so you don't have the rock actually touching the glass bottom, others say eggcrate on pipe legs, others say not to use eggcrate at all as it creates dead spots, is hard to conceal, causes more problems than its worth or could cause the end of life as we know it in your tank!
One advises using a membrane over it & creating a plenum...but that sounds even more risky for a first timer like me...

So what do you do/recommend?

Cheers

New to fish keeping. Second hand tank problems! Please help!

Ok, so I am in some desperate need of help!!

My partner decided to purchase a second hand saltwater tank of eBay, with all the water, live rock, fish, corals etc in it. So after safely transporting it home on Friday evening, the next day we done some tests on the water, and the results were; Ammonia - 0.25, Nitrate - 2.5, Nitrites - 0.1..... We added some more live rock on Saturday and did a partial water change yesterday, in the hope of reducing the Ammonia etc, but it is now; Ammonia - 0.25/0.5, Nitrites - 0.5, PH - 8.3!
Can anyone please help me and tell me what could be wrong or what to do? The fish are very lively, and are all feeding well, and seem very content. I can't say I've seen the yellow tailed blue damsel eat as of yet (we've had it for 5 days now), but he is one of the liveliest fish.
We have; 2 Clowns, 1 Six Lined Wrasse, 1 Bangaii Cardinal, 1 Yellow Tailed Blue Damsel, 1 Slug, 1 Cleaner Shrimp, 3 Snails, 1 Starfish, and 1 Hermit Crab. We are feeding them on a dry flake food that was supplied with the tank.
All we know about the tank (Red Sea Max 130D) is the previous owner had it for 8 months. I wasn't present when my partner decided to purchase it or pick it up, otherwise I would have asked A LOT of questions!
The sand/gravel looks very dirty! We bought a gravel cleaner, but then read that its advised not to disturb the gravel?? When we gave it a bit of a swish, the water got very cloudy and you could just about see through it! This is when we decided to do a water change! I've been reading up on the internet, and I think maybe the filter needs changing? This is our first tank, so I'm not exactly sure what to do!!!

Can anybody please shed some light on this? Its all becoming very confusing. I just want to get it sorted and make a safe environment for the fish!!! Anybody? Please?

Simple stuff no one told you

Ok, so I have read all about what the tank will do in its cycle, the various filter technics, the pros and cons to mechanical and bio filtration, what lights you need for what corel, how much flow, which fish is good with which corel

BUT here is what no one tells you:

1. When adding corel sand to your tank, it will get cloudy, and it will remain cloudy for about 12 hours (I always went to bed so this is a guess!). When you move it even a little bit it will get cloudy again. Once it has settled, for all that is holy - DO NOT MOVE IT AGAIN

2. If you are planing to keep jawfish and require a fair amount of sand for them to burrow in, put the sand in first, let it settle, then do you scaping. Do not try and scape AND then put your sand in.

3. Milliput DOES NOT stick to glass, and will cloud your tank.

4. If you have never used a skimmer before, try it out IN THE GARDEN to see how it works. Dont be an idiot like me and try it out in the house.

As I am once again waiting for the sand to settle, I am sure I will come up with some more basic do's and dont's

6 or 7 foot tank.

Hi all, hoping someone can help, I am wanting to set up a 6'X2'X2', or 7'X2'X'2' Reef tank. Can anyone please tell me or recomend the best line up of equipment for a tank of this size?
I am not sure if I'm going to go down the second hand market, buy bit by bit or hopefully find a 'full set-up'? Would also pefer the ' lees is more" approach so I don't want to be buying top of the range or too high tech! but would (like everyone i think) want good value for money. I am also wanting to use ' ceramic background ', does anyone know where I can purchase them from?

Thanks in advance!

Skimmer waste

I use the marisys 240 skimmer which seems to work, but there is nothing in the collection cup. The only time it only produces anything is when i change the wood airstone, but this only lasts a couple of days. Then nothing. Is it normal for a skimmer to have nothing going into the collection cup or am i missing something. Also does the airstone have to be wood. I know it may sound like a daft question but they dont seem to last long at all. Appreciate any advice.

Sumps

I have always fancied the idea of a sump but there are a few things about these which i find totally baffling. Basically you pump the water out down to your sump and then back up again to your main display tank. Now i have seen a few photos of peoples sumps on this forum and it all just looks puzzling. So i would like some advice to the following.
1) Can a sump be any size or is there a general rule that says your sump should be, say 50% the size of your tank.
2) If one pump fails then wont your sump or display tank over flow.
3) How would you calculate what size pumps you need.
4) do you have to have lighting above a sump and if so does it need to be on 24/7
5) I have noticed a lot of people design and make there own sumps. I have been to quite a few shops yet none sell sumps complete with all the necessary kit. Is it really that easy that to set up.

Im sorry if these questions may sound basic. But i find the whole lot baffling.

Huuuuuuuuge increase in phosphate reading

On Thursday when I tested my PO4 levels, they were at 0.25, so time for a change of Rowaphos in my reactor, to bring them down to 0 again. Nope, exactly the opposite. I have tested 5 times, just to make sure it is right and the reading is a whopping 1!!!! It is the same in the aquarium and coming out of the reactor.

I have changed nothing food wise. Introduced nothing food wise any different to usual. I have tested my RO output water and my made up salt water, both test 0. I did add some Rowa carbon at the beginning of last week to try and remove the yellow tint from the water, but the label does say that even though it leaches phosphate, it shouldn't be enough to show on a test kit. I have even changed 75l of water this weekend in an effort to try and get my other levels right, i'm going nuts here

I am wondering if draining down the sump to move it and turning of the reactor for an hour or so would have had an adverse effect on the Rowaphos? Not sure why that would be a problem though as it isn't tumbled when in the container waiting to be sold!!

Anyway, reactor now reloaded with some more Rowa, let's see if that does the job.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
But NO, she heard I was ooohhhing and aaahhhhing over the scooter in my local LFS, and has since bought one for me. Apparently the LFS sold it to her because just the day before I had been in to get my mg reading double checked and they had tested my water for eveything else.

NOW, the lfs is shut until Thursday, I cant get hold of him, and I have a DRAGONET as an introduction to marine in my tank. I know they are eating blood worms coz I saw them get feed in the LFS and I have some blood worm for the tropical, can I use this?

I also have some brine shrimp again for the tropical, so can I also try him on this?

Tide marks?

Hi,
I am here preparing an old 4ft tank that I've had for the last 35 years! It is all resealed/drilled etc now but there is this strange cloudy tide mark, I have used it as a tropical since it was new and for the last 6 months there has been no life in it except plants so I let the water level drop down to half from evap ready to take it down!
Where the water sat at half way before I took it down there is now this weird water mark! It starts where the water level was and reaches to the bottom so the whole bottom half has it, I know it wasnt the old water going acidic or something like that as the plants were doing great in it! and it is'nt all that visible when wet.
I have tried gental scraping, vinegar, bio washing powder(on a very small area to test), acids of various strenghths I dont know what to try next. Any ideas??
When you feel it it feels more slippery/waxy than the good glass, When you press a finger on the good glass and rub over to the stained area your finger squeeks on the good glass but then slips easier when you get to the stain.
If it were just chalk deposits it would be rough not waxy and also it would be in rings down to where the water sat, this is under the water line??!! Really weird!!!
Has anyone else ever seen anything like this? All help is greatly apreciated,

Which Tank?

Hey all!

I've looked at loads of different forums and decided on posting this here

First off, a little intro!

I've kept plenty of animals over the years, not least of which have been the aquatic variety! I've had cold water and tropical aquariums but have always been a little dubious about going over to the salty side (Due to the amount of work and care marine aquariums require!), but recently the pull has become too much to deny. I've recently graduated from Uni (therefore spending a lot more time at home) and start a new job on Monday so hopefully I'll be able to keep up with the costs!

My problem is that after looking at many different tanks and threads describing other peoples set ups I can't make my mind up on which aquarium to buy

My goal is to have a tank between 20-35g, Live rock, Coral and Fish. I was originally looking at an Interpet River Reef (first the 48l then the 94) then started looking at other nano's and the current tank to take my fancy is the Juwel Rio 125, I think I would rather have a tank in this sort of size bracket (Although a 31 litre difference might not seem much to me I'm sure the aquariums inhabitants would beg to differ if they could!).

Then I started thinking, If I buy a Rio and replace the heater, scrap the filter box, have to replace lights and then buy powerheads I'm paying £160 for a standard glass tank Is there something I'm missing here or does that sum it up?!

My LFS does stock standard glass tanks and I wouldn't be that fussed to buy a barebones tank (although buying a tank with some stuff supplied seems like a comfy option!) and add stuff as I need it but my main worry would be lighting units, first off I'm struggling to find any standard light hoods I could affix some T5's to and looking at some other light units the prices seem a little bit mad!

Any opinions tank wise would be much appreciated! I'm looking to be buying the tank sometime next week

Thanks muchly in advance, Phill.

Re-Start

So here we go no easy way to put it, here is a picture of my tank at the moment. Don't judge me it hasn't had anything living in it for about a year.

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/Rexham/DSC_8813.jpg

Thought I'd just list a few of the bits and bobs I still have -

- Rena Filster x3
- Rena 40x45x120 cm
- Rena Type 2-30 Light
- Red sea prizm energizer (Never really worked)

Currently everything is working (Minus the Red Sea Prizm), I will need to replace the pump impellar and the bulbs in the light.

I've got a load of live rock, I forget how much but it is all covered in algae. I also have a good inch of coral sand covering the bottom of the tank, but that has algae on it. Currently there is nothing living in the tank.

The numbers

Temp 27c
Amomnia N/A test was off the scale
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
PH 8.5

Where do I start?

Well my current plan is to drain the tank by 100%, remove the live rock and remove algae and place in my sump tank.
Secondly I will remove the coral sand, and clean throughly
Thirdly replace the filter material
Then I will replace the water and change 50% the next week. All the time clearing out anything that grows, be really harsh.

I hear turbo snails are good at removing un-wanted things, so thought I might get a few of those.
What else can I do?

HI,

Last weekend i bought 3 filamented flasher wrasses.. 1 male and 2 females from what i can work out, as the male has yellow tips on its fins and seems to have more colour. The trouble is that the male is a right nasty piece of work! 1 of the females had a nip on its fin and is getting chased quite a bit by it, so thought i would leave it to see how things go. The female is alot better now but still getting chased a bit.

Today i noticed my large female clown had a big bash mark on it! im thinking of taking this troubled fish back to the shop for credit...or do u think i should leave it a bit longer and see how things pan out? oh and when i feed the male goes mental like some sick piranha!! http://www.marinefish-uk.co.uk/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/bigemo_harabe_net-168.gif
Any advise people?

Reporting in

Hello!

My name is James Wright. I'm from Bath, I've just finished my A-levels and now looking for work in events management and photography (www.jawns.co.uk) [Just thought I'd plug that]

I have been keeping Marine Fish for the last 5 years. I had to move my tank about 2 years ago and over the course of the next year all my fish died. Having kept Common Clowns, Several Species of Damsel at various points, Yellow Tang and some Cardinal Fish. As well as Cleaner Shrimps and a few Hermit crabs. I was rather sad to see the demise of my collection.

My tank is currently sitting over grown and un-clean and has been for the last 8 months. I have now finished school and should hopefully shortly have a car in order to transport myself. I plan during the next 2 months I plan on completely cleaning everything, filter, coral sand, rock and heaters and then re-establish my tank.

I'm currently looking into a UV Sterilizer to contain my rampant algae problem and changing the current light bulbs and fixtures. My pump impeller is making a lot of noise and will probably need replacing. I also need to move my sump tank to a better position.

All in all its going to be a lot of work but hopefully a lot of fun.

Soft colours turning brown

Hi all

This is my first posting on this site... I've got a question.

I've got a one and a half year old nano reef tank - 26 litres with 2 fish, a clown fish and a 3-striped damsel. They're doing well.

Since the beginning of this year I've starting experimenting with soft corals and making my mistakes which have cost me the loss of my very first coral: a toadstool mushroom and 2 featherdusters.

At the moment I have some healthy corals, including a Brown Button Polyp, a Blue mushroom coral, a Red spotted mushroom coral and a thriving Green Star Polyp. They are all doing very well, growing under subdued lighting and a gentle current via a wavemaker and the filter output, of course. I've alrady successfully taken 2 or 3 frags, also doing well. My problem is that they're all becoming various shades of brown. How can I get back the original colours I bought them with?

Thanks for any input.

Bubble tip anemone

I have only had my bubble tip a couple of days now, and already have come across a problem. It decided to go for a wander and ended getting sucked in to my koralia. Luckily i was there to catch it quick and managed to save it from being diced by the propeller. As i have two of these in the tank i have turned both off to save the nem from suicide over night. Only problem is, this now affects my flow rate. Is there any way to nem proof these or should i take them out completely. The second problem is while my nem was fully open after its apparent suicide bid. It is now still fully open but seems deflated. This afternoon and tonight the base of the nem was never stuck to any rock or surface, it just seemed too be on its side with the base of the foot facing the front of the tank. I have checked my water parameters and all seems ok. As i could not free the nem from the koralia i let it untangle itself on its own accord and there seemed to be no damage done. Is this normal or could this animal be on its last legs. I hope not. I spent about 6-7 mths deciding on to buy a nem or not and spent a lot of time reading about the pros and cons. Please help. dont want my first nem to end in a total disaster.

water flow....need to rethink! so need ideas :)

Need to pick your brains again

as my tank is only 90ltrs im having problems keeping the flow low enough that it doesnt cause a tsunami but high enough to keep everything healthy.

apart from the standard built in filter powerhead (sorry no idea on power/size) im using a 3000 l/h wavemaker which up until yesterday was perfect!

since adding the frags iv realised its probably a little on the high side, no matter where i position the frags or the wavemaker they look like they are in the middle of hurricane katrina! my Zoas was also upside down this morning, though that might have something to do with the bandit brittle star who will drag anything to its cave if it stays still long enough!

have looked for a less powerfull WM but 3000 lh was the smallest iv come across

i have a spare power head but it tended to give too much of a directional flow instead of over a wider space, has anyone used one of those clip on rotational 'thingumies'? or has anyone got any other ideas?

Here we go again

Hi Guys,

Well, with more lessons learned from the last time this has got to be where it starts to go right,
Female laid earlier this afternoon and as you can see in the pic the nest size has increased dramaticly,

So these will be taken off on day 8 which will be Wed 8th September, The tank and heater have already been cleaned and I got 3 gallon of water ready with an SG of 1.019 which is being airated untill needed next week SG may creep up to 1.021 by then but still no problem,
The tank will once more be blacked out at the front and the lid will be put on it so it will be in total darkness, The tank will be airated with 2 airstones and not looked at till late at night, I will not remove the eggs untill around 7:00pm on day 8 so if i leave them till 10pm ish i should have seen the hatch has taken place, I will then take out 1 of the airstones just leaving 1 for water movement and feed the tank with fresh rotifers and rotifer feed, The following morning I will do what I have not been doing which is the probable cause of my troubles which is a 1/3 water change (1Ltr) taking any dead eggs/larave out and check rotifer density and depending on density i'll top up rotifers as nessesary,
Then Hopefully around 7pm the afternoon I can repeat what I did on the morning with the water change and feeding and fingers crossed should see a difference.
If not it's goodbye marine fish Im going to get me a hamster instead.
Anyone know if hamsters can swim?

faulty thermostat

about two weeks ago my heater thermostat broke thus causing the heater to stay on permenately!!! i noticed that all the tank had gone unusually clear, both the water and the rocks were a lot brighter. everything on the living rock had closed up or dissapeared. i set about doing some water checks and only found the ph to be low (nothing unusuall in my tank) racking my brains as to what was happening i noticed my digital thermometer had fallen on its face so i stood it back up and to my horror it was at 34.7 degrees. straight into the sump to disconnect the heater and in with some bags of ice to cool it down. the effects are still noticable but things are getting back to normal although i have lost my hawkfish and a blenny and a small cromis. only just before this happened i had a impellor break (long story) and had to buy a new pump. so just thought i would post this as advice to you all,we all worry about our water clarity and take the temp for granted but the effects of heat has probably done as much damage as any bad fluctuation in water parrameters.as for the hardware i think i will be changeing things a bit more and not just replacing when broke

Duncans shed heads

I've been away this weekend and was looking forward to coming home to play with my new toy (MP10). Before I could do any playing though, I noticed that my Duncans which I have had for about a month now has shed the majority of its heads. It only had 3 when I bought it, but has grown several in the last few weeks. I have managed to salvage the heads and put them in my little pico tank. Thing is, will they survive there or are they done for once the heads depart?

Thanks

I have had a large clip on fan over my tank for the last few months. I saw a good offer for a pair of Azoo fans and bought them. Nice and unobtrusive fit I thought- wrong!! The feet aren't wide enough to take into account the Clearseal surround at the top of the tank . I thought about mounting them at the rear of the tank, but the glass supports get in the way too. Back to the drawing board!!!!

Second post of the day. This is what happens when u have a few too many red wines!!!!!
Iv been told that u should have ur tank running for atleast 12 months before adding an anemone. Is this correct???
Iv got my tank at 0 nitrite,0 nitrate, 0 amonia, and ivnever been able to achieve this before. My tanks been running now for roughly 8 months, but the live rock iv had for over 24 months, transferring from tank to tank. Would it not be safe to add a small bubble tip anemone now as im dying for my clowns to host it????

Tank Cleaning and Sump Plumbing

Hi all,

The other day on live chat it was mentioned to use white vinegar to clean my tank. So forgot to ask then - will this be used neat then rinsed well, or a diluted solution to clean the tank.

Got my 3 sump tanks today, now just need to plumb them together. Can not believe the price of bulk heads at my lfs, so went to the local DIY and all they had was push fit ones. Are these any good? I think I should go for pipe welded ones as it will reduce the chance of leaks appearing, as I need to use 4 just to plumb the sumps together

If I got pipe work etc from local DIY is there any percific type I should use or is it all safe?

Cheers

Coral Beauty Feeding

I have recently purchased a coral beauty, when I collected it from the shop it had a bad graze on its head. I am going to keep an eye on the graze, infact it’s turned more into a hole now. The cleaner shrimp keeps trying to get at it but the CB does not like it. I have got some infection treatment stuff for it now though.
The main thing is I don’t really know what I should be feeding it because I cant get it to touch anything but frozen brine shrimp.

Has anyone got any experience with this?
