Some people find these rather plain but i like them a lot for the subtle colour. This boy is a particularly good specimen with a nice point growing at the top of his tail and a perfect profile.
Eats like a horse and no sign of injury or disease. He never stays still.

4 dead fish then 4 more dead fish and dead corals...what are we doing wrong?

Can anyone help? We upgraded our small tank to a 130L one and everything seemed fine. Then we lost a small butterfly fish (vanished overnight). We thought it was just one of those things. A week later and overnight a tellow tang, a regal tang, a blue green chromis, died and some of the others looked very iffy. Then the starfish died and 3 corals died and another coral looked like it was on the way out. We took a water sample and were advised there had been a massive drop in PH (from 8.2 to 7.2 in 48hrs) so bought a PH buffer and a PH tester and brought the PH back up to 8.1 and thought we were ok. We bought a new 270L tank on the strength of it and were looking forward to transferring the fish. Last night we lost a 5 stripe wrasse, (I think its called) a yellow head sand sifter and our little jawfish and shrimp. You can imagine how p'd off we are. We've been wracking our brains trying to think what we've done. All we can think is that just before thefirst fish died we fed the corals (salifert coral food) and one started shrivelling up right away. The morning after the fish were dead. Last night we fed the corals again and overnight - carnage. When we bought the coral food, (with a new cora)l the guy in the shop said "just put a squirt in" so hubby did. Last night he was more careful and checked that he followed the instructions but found our fish dead.. Can anyone come up with any ideas?. We're quite new to this and obviously trying to learn fast, it all seemed to be going well and now we've got a huge tank and very few fish left. I think we'd pack in if we hadn't just bought this new tank. All the other levels were fine (we got them tested at our local shop). Help please?

Curious to see what everyone else is using (and also which is the cheapest), so post up what you're running, and a brief cost analysis, such as price per 20 kilo bucket. From that we can calculate a cost per kilo as a more exact guide.

I've just started using the new Tetra Marine Sea Salt which comes in a 20 kilo bucket. Costs me £38 from my LFS, so costs £1.90 per kilo. Prior to that I was using Aqua One salt, 20 Kilo costing £35, so £1.75 per kilo.

One thing I've noticed with the Tetra is that it takes more salt to make 5ltrs of water at 1.023.
The Great Marine Fish List

The Great Marine Fish List - Click Here-

Hello everyone well i have finally edited the marine fish list i have been working on. The basic list is from wikipedia but i have updated it for this forum.

Ok the list is not complete and it is a work in progress as you can see it is a large list. If there is a mistake or you would like to see a fish added to the list please can you leave a message here in this forum stating..

Common name
Image address
Taxonomy
Reef safe
Care Level
Max size of fish

I'm having a real problem with Nitrate, currently offscale on my test kit, so over 180ppm! I did a load of water changes which got it down to 40ppm a few weeks back, but it's back up again. Amazed my fish haven't croaked it already!

My tank has lots of brown algae aswell and it looks pretty depressing. Thinking of selling it all again, but think my wife will murder me!!!

My tank is roughly 300litres with an external filter full of Nitrazorb, Carbon and Rowaphos and I'm running a Deltec MCE600.

In the tank I currently have a Lawnmower Blenny, pair of Clarkii Clowns, a Flame Angel, an Emperor Angel and a Jade Wrasse.

Any Ideas??????

My story

Hi all,

I know its probably been asked a lot but i have had odd problems with power at home yesterday and if my wife hadnt been home im almost sure it could have been a bad day

Power triped and all power to sockets turned off......basically after unplugging everything and turning them back on the wife said one of the fish tank extension leads was to blame because she plugged it in twice and this tripped the house again!

She left it as i was already on my way home and i plugged all in and guess what.....NOTHING!!! all ok....

Also this stuff has been running a 1.5-2years

I am now thinking of a UPS back up or similar that can be fitted in line so if this happens again it wil automatically take over

any one know of such a device or use one?
Cost?

Thanks

Starting reef Tank

Hi I am in the process of building my first reef marine tank i have been on here asking a load of questions about it. So far I have a "FLUVAL" 200 litre thank with a "FLUVAL" external 205 liltre filter ( cant go down drill hole in tank route) , 2" V Sim" nano Skimmers and 2 "Hydon Koralla Movement & Circulation pumps. Have spoken to Paul @ ACA
sorted the lighting for the reef tank ( very expensive but told it would be for reef tank) also will be getting live rock sand of him as well. The thing I wish to know have i got enough gear now and in the right place for my reef tank or do i need more circulation pumps or skimmers?. or move any of the gear to a different positions?. have already brought all the testing gear etc have included some photos to show how the tank is at the moment. hope there is not to much more to buy as most of my budget is going to be spent on the lighting side. Also just one more thing as my tank is in the front room & as you can see there is not a lot of spare room when it comes to changeing water and puting new water in is there a pump i can use or should I use one of those gravity pups? as my old lady says if I get any water on her very expensive carpet she will feed me to the fishes! Thanks for any advice given.

Upgrading to a Larger Tank

Hey All!
I've currently ran my orca TL-550 (128Li) for around 2.5 years?
Looking for something... Larger!

I'll probably buy from eBay 'used'. What should I look out for?
I really know nothing about the bigger tanks, and the advanced sumps.
To be honest I don't even know what size I want to go to.

I just know I'll be buying more live rock, and transferring my 2 clowns, algae blenny, dragonet & cleaner shrimp + the Deltec 300.

I have a few questions please, if someone could spare me 2 minutes (I'd really appreciate it)
1) What size would you recommend? (I know it's down to pref, I don't want to jump up too big, but want to be able to keep a tang and a decent size anemone for the clowns)
2) What model/made tank are the best? - or will anything do?
3) Lighting, what lighting set-up?
4) I like the idea of an ATS - if they can keep display algae to a minimum and help decrease water changes that would be fantastic!
5) I don't want a massssivvveeee electricity bill, is this to do with the lighting?

PS I might sell the Orca on here, if they go for more than £40.... haha

Very much appreciated,

im considering moving up to a 5x2x2 tank, how best to transfer sand/crushed coral from one to the other, i guess the rock is easy enough and the water? by transferring everything then obviously adding more water, will this cause a spike or a cycle to start of any kind, and if so would my inverts/fish be ok with a mini cycle, if not suggestions on a postcard please .... just not sure if its gonna be worth the hassle although a 5x2x2 sounds juicy!!!

Another New Marine(r)

Hello All

I'm a complete beginner to marine fishkeeping and heard this is the best place to be for info and advice so thought i'd sign up and say hello.

Been wanting to setup a marine tank for a while now so decided to take it slow and have a go.

Equipment list so far:

Juwel Rio 240l

T5 marine blue / white lighting

Standard Juwel filter / heater (for now)

Deltec mce600 skimmer

2x 3000lph powerheads

Royal Nature salt

RO filter w/ DI

20kg of live rock

Coral sand

Refractometer and all testing equip etc

So far the water is in and up to temp / salinity (25oC / 1.026), live rock & sand been in for 1 week, skimmer ready to go once the live stock added.

Now the first of hopefully not too many questions:
I have been reading through the forum now for several weeks while waiting for everything to be delivered, and have noticed that most mariners with Juwel tanks have removed the built-in filter box / sponges.
Is this mainly for cosmetic purposes to make more room in the tank or does the waste build-up on the sponges have a negative effect on the tank? I would like to remove at some point in the future but for now im happy the replace the media on regular basis unless they do more harm then good.

My main question though is regarding the cycling of the tank and live rock.
The rock was bought locally one week ago today from a mature tank and placed staight into my tank, being out of the water for max 1 hour. The rock is full of coralline algae and is covered with tiny grey starfish and when the lights go out, is covered with little "flea-like" bugsand tiny centipede-like critters so im happy i've got some pretty good stuff.
I've been testing the A-N-N levels since the rock has been in and have had virtually zero readings all week and no signs of any brown algae at all. I did kind of expect this as little should have died during the trasportation.
Do i need to do something to start the cycle off or should it be ok to start adding a few CUC?

Think that will do for now, will try and add a photo or two if possible.

Thanks in advance, Adam

Both my lfs have gorgeous regal angels in right now. I have been watching them closely but only seen 1 eat thus far and that was only garlic enhanced brineys. They are all around 4". Is it worth risking the eating one. I would put down a deposit and leave it at least 4 weeks to ensure it really is eating. Only trouble is they are from a filipino exporter so worried re cyanide but colour and behaviour does not suggest cyanide...:huh::huh:
I am very very tempted...

Lighting times....

What time do your main lights come on & go out again?.......

I currently have 12 hours with white T5's and hour either side with the Blue aquarays (they wake the tank up nice and slow) and a moon light in the evening which is a very dim blue. then all off when I go to sleep.
So:

7:00am Blue aquarays slowly brighten and are on 100% by 7:30am
8:00am White T5 tubes on with blue aquarays
8:00pm White t5 tubes off blue aquarays on
9:00pm Blue aquarays start to dim down, and are off by 9:30pm
Blue moonlight (very dim) until about 1:00am
1:00am - 7:00am no lights are on at all, either in the tank or in the room.

Ive been told by my LFS 8 hours should really be a maximum.

I changed it last night so that the main lights are 12:00 - 08:00pm but I missed being able to see the tank lit properly before I went to work.

what does everyone on here run times wise?

First job on the list is to find out as much as possible before I even set anything up.
So has anyone got any good articles?
What is the best fish to start breeding and easiest?
What size tanks are best for breeding and the fry?
Does lighting matter? (type of lighting and strength)
Is it worth going into it?

Am i doing the right thing

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to ask this prior to pulling apart and selling off all my Discus and other fresh water fish. The two questions are really:

How much effort and time does a simple SW tank take a week with water changes and generalk maintenace take?

Do you think that my electricity bills are going to be massivley higher moving to SW?

I currently run 2 x big externals T*8 lighting x 4 tubes and 2 x Arcadia Eco LED's and water temp at 30 degrees C.

Im planning to use 4 - 6 T5's and 2 x Arcadia Eco LED's and to also run a sump with a return pump and 3 to 4 powerheads.

I really love SW but also love my FW at the same time. Want a new challenge and direction but just wanted to see your views before I jump completely in and sell all my fish.

To put the maintenance into context Im currently doing around 300 litre water changes a week and im on a water meter...... Tank and sump will be 400l total.....

Thanks for any thoughts. I want to do this properly or not at all. I dont want to find its massivley expensive (I dont mind a bit more) or I cant give the care that they need.....

Cheers!

Marine White aquaray duo 600 with T5 mounts

Marine White Aquaray 600 ultra duo.

I bought these a few days ago, but I don't have room for them in my original hood as I already have 4 other lights, they were hung over the aquarium for 2 minutes and as a result are still new.

These strips have 5 white LEDs on each strip, these are the latest version that have the wide spread beam. The warranty card will be included and is still blank so the buyer can fill this in to get 5 years warranty from TMC.

I will also include 4 x T5 adaptors and a pair of mms rails. These are ready to go and replace you T5 tubes! Each strip is rated at 24w meaning one strip will replace 1 T5 tube. The light given off these is much nicer than that of the t5 tubes also.

There's £200 worth of stuff here. So grab a bargain.

Included:
2 x aquaray 600 ultra (marine White)
1 x twin psu power pack
2 x mms rails for hanging
4 x T5 rail Adaptors, so LEDS can replace T5's
1 x warranty card
1 x cleaning cloth
1 x bag of fixing mounts for numerous mounting options
Original box

£140 + post.

My Berghia Nudi

Having neglacted my tank for 4 weeks and not zapping any aiptasia I have ove 50 in my 100l tank. Time for Berghias I thought! These are not cheap but I thought I better get three to allow some good breeding to take place. Aquatics express shipped me these next day and I got them yesterday. They came with an excellent instruction and acclimatisation sheet which I followed and did a nice slow 4 hour drip acclimatisation and added them at lights out.

I watched them with a torch for a while after introduction and they just found a comfy spot on the rock.

Today I noticed one on the move towards an aiptasia!

Now you see the aiptasia

Now you don't

I see another Nudi still in the same place as last night so must not be hungry yet, and one has not been since introduction.

A great start, and mu fingers are crosses I will have lots of Nudis soon
